Some great council of humans in the face of the shadow's rage. Ryuuza simply couldn't be bothered, slumbering away in her newest cave. As long as she survived, little else mattered to her. Perhaps she would find a new pet, if any humans yet lived... though, much to her annoyance, her older cousin appeared, glimmering sapphire, and hauled her off to some not-place, giving her a long lecture. It would be a boring decade.
A century later. Her kin were dying out. She and her sapphire cousin were among the last. In a rare moment of weakness, she confided in her newest pet, telling the weak mortal of her fears, of how this may be the end of her great species, for she could not lay an egg even if she wished to, even if she sought out a male of her kin right this instant to continue the line. Of how she sometimes dreamed of an annoying mortal that yet caught her interest, though she knew not why, of snowy hair and sapphire eyes.... The next morning, she left her pet behind, ashamed to have shown so much weakness.
She started losing track of the years. She marked the time by what pets she kept and how the humans advanced.
A small female grew strong, then weak, then died. A reckless male tumbled from a cliff while she was away. Another male tried to make advances on her, and she discarded him. She watched over a human child from birth until death, and watched as another screamed that she had killed them. She did not take on new pets for a century after that.
The humans farmed, worked iron, then steel, then found new ways of generating electricity, much like the old world once had, but differently. Towns began to grow into cities.
Ryuuza sank into a hot spring at a hotel for such, staring up at the night sky. These businesses always managed to last the test of time. Business.... "...perhaps I shall make my own. Perhaps... diamonds?" She lifted the heart-shaped diamond that was suspended from her neck by a loop of her own scales, pondering the only remnant of her first pet. Why had she kept it? Even she did not know. And when she returned to her room, her mind was still cycling through possibilities of her newest endeavor.... Perhaps... she would name it for her first two pets. She still remembered their names, their faces. Snow white and pure blue flickered through her thoughts, but she dismissed it.
Another decade. She found new pets, told them to work for her, and they did. She gathered skills and the skilled. Goldsmiths, silversmiths, gemcutters. She secured supplies with the same hypnotic eyes and smooth speech she had applied in her youth when she had to deal with businesses. Hanarai Jewelers formed its first shop, and she watched over it in silence.
A century. Two. Three. She had many employees now, and many, many shops. Few actually received the privilege of speaking to her, of carrying out her commands, and no mortals outside of the company ever once saw her, or heard of her. She preferred to be an enigma. The public was a nuisance. She surveyed the world from a glass box, high in the sky, something the humans deemed a 'skyscraper', and a 'penthouse'. The view of the sky was marred by only a single building, to her personal annoyance. Something called "Seitech". But she allowed their presence in her skies, for the other company seemed to make useful things, according to her managers and assistant-pet. They advanced technology. But her interest was not held, beyond that mild annoyance....
Her assistant rambled on and on about charities and how they would be good for the company image. Ryuuza waves a dismissive hand as she looked down the list, only for one to stand out... and she circled it before handing it back to her assistant. "Put all of our charity funds towards this and any like it." And with that, Ryuuza resumed her bored stare out at the skyline, barely noticing the Seitech building anymore. Others had risen up, as well. "And begin construction on new upper floors. I wish to see the skies clearly." The assistant bowed and rushed off to inform the managers of the CEO's latest decision: the sole charity focus shall be towards funding research on curing uncurable diseases and similar such medical charities, and the skyscraper needs to grow in height by probably twenty new floors.
She was no longer sure what pace time moved at. The days were slow and boring, but they moved by swiftly. One assistant was replaced by another, the former's daughter. It was growing to be a family tradition, from what she understood. The new child was far more insistent, however. Something about a gala, and public image, and how she shouldn't be holed up in her penthouse all the time. Ryuuza scoffed. It had been a decade since she had last needed to leave. This was her den.
And yet... she had not flown in just as long. Perhaps another visit to her cousin was in order. Technology was growing to be a nuisance in detecting invisible flying objects. She shot a pointed glare at the Seitech building, a soft growl rumbling in her throat and how it had matched her tower's new height... until she finally scoffed. "...fine. I shall attend this... gala. Fetch me when it is time and appoint a trusted driver."
As her assistant ran off, Ryuuza watched her with hypnotic eyes of pure black... and sighed. She had truly grown weak to these lesser creatures, hadn't she?
